I'm an extremely sentimental person. I started this blog for personal reasons two years ago. During that two years, my life has changed so much and this blog has grown into so much more than I anticipated. I've been working on some changes and decided that it was time for a change in this blog...or a move as the case would be. I'm very hesitant to make the switch...but hopefully this will help me to be found a little more easily. :)

Backyard Sunset

Yes...another sunset!
I've often seen a beautiful sunset from my back door and thought "I wish I could capture that." Unfortunately, I'm surrounded by power lines, houses and trees...not a very nice set-up for pretty picture.
In early August, I couldn't help myself. My hubby called me outside to see a fiery red sunset. Before the sun could finish its grand exit, the moon was already shining above it...yep, with power lines and all.

Here's a more dramatic image featuring a bright planet glowing from behind tree limbs. The planet's glow (which was actually neon green) was converted to black and white to keep it from totally dominating the entire image.

"5 Things"

Recently some friends (and fellow photographers) and I participated in an activity through which we helped each other to "define our styles" (by listing 5 things that we thought of when we thought of each other's images). This week, I finally had time to really look at the information. I noticed three areas with three fitting descriptive words. So I grouped and defined the areas. Then I created a blog header [see above] featuring an image (from recent sessions) which fit into each category.

What is intended? (what is the purpose)
* From nature to natural light photography to theater, I have a wide range of subjects which I enjoy photographing.
* Sometimes I photograph to "define a moment in time" (also known as storytelling). I want to allow the viewer to see a story behind the image.
* Sometimes I just want to be a little adventurous! :) I enjoy both creative angles and creative processing.

What is seen?
* vibrant popping tones/color
* relaxed yet strong subjects (images with a "peaceful strength")
* technique meets artistic interpretation...While I have studied MANY hours learning proper techniques, I also enjoy using creative interpretation to take an image from a portrait to something more artistic.

What is felt?
(This was my personal favorite category. Images can be simply reflections of an moment in time but I'm more drawn to images which stir an emotion...happiness, sadness, anxiousness, etc.)
* soulful
* moody
* thoughtful/emotive

Yeah...so that's how my friends describe my images. I thought it sounded much better than any of my feeble attempts to define my style. (Thanks, y'all!!)

Exciting!

I've had several projects going here and haven't gotten around to blogging in awhile...which is sad because I actually have images just waiting to be blogged about. *sigh*

I think I'll start with sharing this...
Yesterday I got some exciting news. I've shared this image before but this time is even more special. "Sucker!" (as I titled it) was chosen as a July finalist and third place winner at PhotoShowdown (an international online photo competition)!!!

Fairytale Beginning

I had been looking so forward to this wedding ever since this couple got engaged. These two are such beautiful fun people to be around...I knew that their wedding would be something special. I was absolutely right! I don't think I've ever seen a happier bride and groom! :)
Every detail was gorgeous! The bride was glowing...and the groom was enjoying the day! The cakes, the candles, the flowers, the location...everything was so beautiful! Even the minister's words were so special...and meaningful...

I saw this arrangement in the girls' bathroom...
Even the collection of cell phones, keys and flowers looked as if they'd been carefully placed to be beautiful.

It overlooked the actual ceremony location and she was catching a peek as the first guests were arriving.

I was having so much fun laughing at their antics that I had to keep in mind to click the shutter. :)

I have actually had the idea for this image in my mind for years
but I had to find just the right couple to fit with it... :)
The reception was lit with candles.

Mr. & Mrs. W ~ I want to thank you so much for including me in your special day! I was truly honored to be able to spend this time with you and your wonderful families. I hope these images fill your mind and hearts with as many beautiful memories as they do mine.

A New Beginning

Today marked the beginning of a new era in our family. Our youngest one started her first day of Kindergarten today! :)
She's not in just any class...She is in a class of her own (literally). After a very agonizing year and a half (and more), we decided that it was best for her to be home-schooled (at least for now). So, as her older sister headed off to her first day back in school this morning, we got ready for our own day of learning. As a former teacher, it was interesting to once again be filling that role. Thankfully, I had a wonderful student!

And after the day of study, here she is sporting her "extra special" sticker for good behavior!!

Oh, well...I guess it's official now.
Summer break really is over. *sigh* :(

Military families spend a lot of time waiting on their loved ones to return...and missing them so much. I have so much appreciation for their sacrifice.

Missing Daddy...

When this mom contacted me about doing a session for her military husband, my first response was excitement. I was so excited to be helping share some special moments with someone who is dedicated to protecting our country. I am SO thankful for the sacrifices of these families!
Then I got a little nervous thinking about all the goals that I had for this session. The mom had indicated that she wanted natural relaxed images, so that was my major goal. But I also wanted to create a some more artistic images for them to enjoy as well as convey the emotion of this beautiful family waiting...
My plan became to provide little direction and just let the kids behave naturally for the most part. The emotional part needed no direction.

Tiny Flyers

I spent a relaxing afternoon enjoying some little winged ones from the comfort of my front porch. When I told my hubby that I could sit and enjoy the hummingbirds for hours, I really meant it! I just adore the way they fly so fast, pick at each other and 'chatter' so much. I find watching them so relaxing...or maybe it's just that when I'm watching them I'm actually taking the time to relax. Either way, I had a great time just being around them.
For some reason, while others would aspire to capture a hummer in flight, my preference is to capture them sitting. I see so much more personality when they stop. So, I challenged myself today to capture a hummer sitting on the rosebush.

When I first dedicated myself to my challenge, I looked for an exposure that would work. I had to overexpose the background and use fill flash.

Next there was looking for a good angle.
At one angle had the sky in the background...but the light sky and clouds made for a clean yet boring background.

After finding a better angle with a much more interesting background, I waited...watching and trying to be still. Then I was rewarded when this cute little hummer sat on the rosebush right in front of me.

She was so comfortable that she began cleaning herself and allowed me a few clicks of the camera (these two were actually the only two that I took).
Then there was the surprise guest, a hummingbird moth, who flew to the flowers in front of me and thrilled me with it's presence for a few seconds.

Summer Sunset

To photograph a sunset has become a therapy to me. If I feel 'down and out,' I can go spend some time with my camera and a sunset to feel better. Yes, it works!
Tonight I went to see a summer sunset. I was not in a bad mood. I just wanted to enjoy the view.
Typically, I find the colors of a winter sunset much more appealing...but I was in the area where I most like to photograph sunsets, so I stopped. The sky was a mixture of empty blue and fluffy white clouds with a just spark of sunlight. Slowly the bright blue faded into light blue into a dull dark blue...and the clouds floated away. (In one of these, you can see a tiny boater making waves across the water.)

For some reason, I've been enjoying the grainy film look lately.
Here's an artistic rendition of the sunset using texture and grain.

Fall Creek Falls

I like to make vacation plans. Sometimes they work out...Other times they remain unfulfilled dreams.
Two years ago, I started making plans to visit some of the waterfalls of East Tennessee. I studied how to get beautiful waterfall images. I bought some equipment that I needed. I even contacted a photographer who I admired and he gave me some wonderful suggestions on which falls to see. However, I never got to make the trip.
This year the timing was right and I made plans to visit Fall Creek Falls State Park. Unfortunately, I found out the week that I was leaving that the photographer I had admired had passed away. I hated that I would never be able to share these images with him. But I'm happy that I get to share them with you.

I only wish this image could have turned out better. Full sun is NOT your friend when photographing waterfalls. It had just rained and the sun was unrelenting! This was taken from the overlook at the top of the fall.

It was a LONG hike to the bottom of the fall. We found this beautiful little hideaway was along the trail.

The next two images were taken at the bottom of the fall. It was absolutely worth the exhausting hike...and did I mention that it was LONG! Fortunately, there was more shading at the bottom of the fall so the shooting conditions were better. :)

Pirates at Pickwick

July 19, 2008 ~ Pirates Invaded the Pickwick Belle
Special entertainment for the Pickwick Belle cruise included an invasion by a band of pirates, who took over the ship before escaping with the ship's treasure.
If you ever get the chance to take a cruise on the Belle, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The boat is beautiful, the staff is so nice and the view is gorgeous!

Little Cutie

I had such a great time photographing this little cutie at the beginning of summer. But since some of the images were intended as a gift for Daddy, I didn't post a sneak peek of her.
Most of the time, my blog is filled with adults and teens so I decided to feature a younger one today. Besides, she is absolutely adorable and was so cooperative...just too cute not to share. :)

On July 8, one of my images was featured as the people Picture of the Day at PhotoShowdown.com.
As I've probably mentioned before, my introduction to learning photography was online competitive photography. I trained in that area and try to continue to participate in that area once in awhile.
It's always a thrill when an image that you really like is chosen for any honor...This is one of those special images for me. :)

Sparkles in the Air

I hope everyone had a wonderful and sparkling 4th of July weekend! :)

We were traveling and actually missed the fireworks on the 4th. I was bummed. :(
But imagine my excitement when we literally found this fireworks show (on the 5th) by accident. We stopped by a convenience store where (unknown to us when we stopped) they were preparing to do a fireworks show!

Unfortunately, I didn't get to use all the wonderful notes that I'd memorized for shooting fireworks (although my friend and fellow photographer Hayley did a fantastic job!). Instead, I had to opt for my old standby and shoot these handheld. (The fireworks were fired too close to our location and went off at so many random places in the sky...making it was more than the tripod could handle.)
Oh, well...maybe I'll get to use those notes next year! I was just happy that I got to see these beautiful burst of color in the air...4th of July just wasn't the same without them!

Call Me or Better Yet, EMAIL!

Just a note to let you know (again) that I've been having cell phone issues (dropped calls...I know this because my hubby is been among those who have gotten lost out there in cellphone land). The Zoo

Vacation Time

Well...Technically I'm working tonight...BUT I'm "officially" on vacation. We will be in and out of town for the next couple of weeks while we enjoy some family time! :)

We didn't have much time which meant that we didn't get to go to some of the more creative locations where I enjoy shooting portraits. In fact, we basically had just one location. So, I decided to go with one of my favorite ways to shoot...using lots of backlighting!

Safari Day

I'm behind on my blogging! I've got several posts to make but I'll keep it to just one big one tonight.
We took a trip to visit the Tennessee Safari Park last week. My family and I are huge animal fans so we are always thrilled to check out a new place involving animals.
We didn't know what to expect. We arrived at the park around mid-day. We were directed to go through the drive-through section first then stop and enjoy the petting zoo. I had read that a giraffe was one of the residents. I was so excited...hoping to get a chance to get close to a giraffe. We rode through the entire section and were slightly disappointed that we never saw the giraffe...but the other animals were so cool! Then we parked and went toward the petting zoo and gift shop. At first, it looked like your average petting zoo...but then my hubby walked around the corner of the building. He turned and said, "Well, here's your giraffe." I was so excited! I hurried around the corner and was standing right in front of a very tall giraffe. I was a little uncomfortable at first to be so close to such a beautiful animal. It was much taller than I expected.
I overcame my initial shock and ended up having the most memorable experience of the trip...I fed a giraffe!! It was a dream come true!! I was so close to one of my favorite wild animals that it's tongue touched me as it ate from my hand! Wow!

Weather: Cloudy

I was photographing a few days ago and just happened to glance up at the sky. The white clouds were beautiful against the blue sky. It was so relaxing to just watch the clouds go by slowly.
Sometimes it's nice to stop and smell the roses...
But sometimes it's nice to stop and watch the clouds...

Empty Nest Syndrome

The day had to come...
I walked out one morning and heard the cries of what sounded like our little robin/bluebird...but they were coming from the opposite side of the carport. I walked closer and spotted the figure of a bird. It looked like my little bird! And sounded like my little bird!
I rushed to the other side of the carport, hopped up to look in the box expecting to see it empty. Sure enough...It was! I have no idea how his larger body fit through that small opening...but it did.
So, off I went to catch another glimpse of the little one on the power line. As I returned, it seemed as if the baby bird was waiting to show me it's new trick. It flew off with beauty across the road into a tree! I was so proud! :)
With that flight, I had the answer to my big question....Instead of hopping on the ground for weeks like the average robin, it flew away like a bluebird. As it left I sighed and thought, "You poor thing...You really do think you're a bluebird!" Then I couldn't help but imagine how awkward it could be when the little one decides to get a "girlfriend" (lol)! :D

Since then it has returned to sit on the line and sing a song. I hope it continues to visit. I kinda miss his loud and constant cries for food.

To answer the question from several people...No, there are no pictures of my disguise (Thank Goodness!!! or, at least I hope there aren't...Yikes!). To get most of the pictures of the baby bird, I had to come up with a disguise. The box was in an area with very few options for hiding...not to mention those birds were just so smart! So, I went out on a hot day in full sun with a dark sheet covering myself and my camera in order to disguise myself...and luckily it worked! Don't worry...It was in a fenced in area of our yard...so the neighbors didn't call the "funny farm" to come get me. However, the heat was not my friend...I was dripping in sweat literally but was very determined to record this special family in action. (After all, how many times are you going to see something like this...I HAD to share!!)
It was certainly not a disguise that I would use if there were a chance that I'd be seen...but absolutely worth recording this special event!

My Coneflower

One of the things that I like about summer is all the beautiful flowers. Although I'm not a huge flower fan, I have grown to enjoy planting flowers and watching them grow...at least hopefully they will grow. ;)
Last year I purchased a coneflower. As a first time coneflower buyer, I wasn't very aware that their was a "designer" version...at least that's the reason I was given for paying so much more for this particular coneflower.
I awaited eagerly earlier this summer to see if my coneflower would re-grow...and it did. :)

Pushing My Luck

Animals hold a special place in my life. I can't resist the strong temptation to view their world. I'm so drawn to getting closer to them.
So, this special mixed family (bluebirds raising a robin baby) has really attracted my attention. I have to admit I've been very good at giving them space...But the unique feeding routine is just something that I've found so intriguing.
After capturing the images that I shared a few posts ago, I couldn't help but want to get closer. So, I finally came up with a way to do that by disguising myself and my camera where very little other than the lens could be seen...(my neighbors must really think I'm nuts!).

The male bird (below) is less friendly than the female. She tends to tolerate my presence a little more. He shares his disapproval vocally when I get a little too close and I try to respect his wishes. Fortunately with my disguise, I was able to capture some of him feeding without upsetting him.

At this point, we are still keeping a close eye on the young one to keep track of the growth and carefully monitoring the situation to make sure that it doesn't grow too big for the bird-box, as we do not want it to get stuck in there. However, with this unusual family, who knows what the future may bring?! Maybe they'll do just fine all by themselves...and against all the odds! :)

Adoption of a Special Kind

Earlier in the summer my hubby found a blue bird egg in the yard. Since there was no nest in the immediate area, he checked the bluebird box. There was a single little blue egg there so he put the found egg next to it. Time goes by...and finally we hear noise from the box. At least one of the eggs had hatched! When we checked, there was a single baby bird nestled inside...a single baby robin! Since that time, we've watched the bluebird couple care for their adopted baby with all the love of a bluebird. (Apparently, their own egg didn't make it...which was what we expected as it had been there for some time.) They have even "defended" their newborn when curious robins were attracted by the baby's calls. We are having to watch the nest carefully now...as the baby is growing and will not be able to get through the hole when it comes time to fly away (that should be interesting!).
Today I was fortunate enough to capture some "feeding time" moments. :)

Which means it's Daddy bird's time to feed
and still baby cries for more...
Momma looks a little confused.
Do you think she notices anything unusual about her little one? :)

Since the little one's head is bigger than the parents...and his mouth is MUCH bigger...I think they are starting to notice that they have a special baby on their hands. But it doesn't stop them from providing for the youngster as best as they can. Isn't that sweet!?!

Fireworks in May!

The month of May brings birthdays, the end of school and the Buford Pusser Festival (named in memory of legendary Sheriff Buford Pusser). The four day festival features carnival rides/games, live entertainment, food, vendors and FIREWORKS!
Now I have to admit that I'm not much of a carnival person. But I do enjoy a good fireworks show! So, we headed down to the park to enjoy the show. It was a blast (literally)! My only complaint is that they shot the fireworks too quickly...and I didn't get to shoot more! :)

Feeling B&W

I was just in a "b&w mood" when I edited these images...partly because the color really detracted from the purpose of the images. I set out to capture some "pulled my 2nd tooth images" (yep...she did it again...all by herself...Yay!), but with her, things are never that easy...

I had to get the "tree hugging" series...

My friend and fellow photographer, Candy, informed me that today is World Turtle Day 2008. As lucky would have it, I actually had some unedited turtle photos (What are the chances of that!?! LOL!). My hubby rescued this small turtle from the road.

Although you can't tell much, it was a young one...

A Special Flower

I've been such a bad blogger lately...But I have an excuse. I've been working to update my entire website...which was time-consuming! And, with school winding to a close, I've been just trying to keep up. It's always a challenge to keep up with the changing schedules and activities during the last few weeks of school where I live.

So...Here I am sharing another flower.
I bought some gerbera daisies (which were in support of a special cause, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation). The daisies were all light colors which were in contrast to the bright gerbera daisies that I normally see. The ones that I purchased had a light pink (or peach) tint.
I found the soft colored flower a beautiful contrast to my rough concrete birdbath.

The Rose

Ok...I'm not really a flowery person. I usually like flowers for a reason (they attract butterflies, they add color, they attract hummingbird...you get the idea...). I've never been a big rose person either. So, I was only mildly interested when my hubby decided that we should plant a rose last year. He selected one called something like blue lavender. Last year, we actually had several roses...but nothing compared to this year!
Over the past year the rose grew enough to earn itself a trellis. After we went out and bought the trellis, our rose showed its appreciation by bursting out of its winter shell, all covered in big beautiful roses!

I was absolutely thrilled when these two asked me to do their engagement photos. I was even more thrilled after spending some time with them. They are such a wonderful couple! It was SO obvious that these two are SO in love!! I told him that he was getting a wonderful gal...but I think she has met her match! :)
I came home from this session with a smile on my face. I really had such a good time. They were so easy to photograph and were the most cooperative models! Now there is only one problem...I had such a good time that I took LOTS of photographs, so I'm going to have a hard time picking out which ones to proof! It was hard enough picking out the ones for this sneak peek.

A Brush with Greatness

I'm 99.9% sure that this is the first time that I have viewed a bald eagle in the wild. The beautiful pair nested in a nearby park. Park officials have been great to set up a restricted area around the nest to allow them space and a viewing area to allow onlookers to appreciate their beauty.
I had known that the eagles had nested for awhile but wanted to allow them space. After finding out that the babies were getting near flying, I decided that I'd better go before I missed my chance to see them. The cloudy late afternoon day allowed comfortable viewing.

It was a very special experience for me as I stood in the presence of such a majestic animal in total freedom. As the sun began to disappear, the parent looked protectively as the babies stretched their wings inside the nest giving only quick glimpses of their little selves.

It was such an awesome experience to stand in the presence of this gorgeous animal (who has been on the endangered species list) and have it look down on me. I admired its beauty while it looked at me with only mild interest, not seeing me as a threat in the least.

Here in America, the eagle symbolizes freedom. After seeing so many eagles in captivity, it was such a thrill to see this one truly free! :)

Some fun with background

I had meant to share this with you earlier...but got sidetracked. So, I decided to try this post again... :)

While shooting recently I found this porch area with these interesting square columns. While I chose to capture the obvious shot...I also wanted to try something different.

By placing my subject strategically, I was able to use the column immediately behind her and the one in the distance to create the illusion of a simple background of one solid color.

As you can tell from the above image, the columns were actually a yucky yellowish color. So, black and white automatically became the most appealing choice for me.

Through using composition, I was able to create two different looking images with the same background. The final image became a product of the vision I saw.

Ever have one of those weeks where you feel like you've worked all week and have not much to show for all your hard work? Well, I do...
I've mentioned before that I'm working on some behind-the-scenes things. Some things (I'm proud to say) have gotten accomplished! Others have not (I need some phones and emails to be answered!!).
If you've visited my website lately, it's certainly a "work in progress" right now. Things look to me like a messy construction site...lol! However, the things I need to do probably don't bug others as much as they do me. It was one of those things that I started and it wound up being a bigger job that I expected...which is sad since I saw it as a challenge from the beginning.

OK...so I've rambled on enough. I'll share an image...

Early this morning (after all night working on it)...She pulled her first tooth! Yep, she pulled it herself. And, yes, she's bursting with pride. She won't even put it under her pillow since it's now one of her most precious possessions. :)

As a reward for being such a trooper and letting me take some "I pulled my first tooth" photos, she got a big sucker! Yummy!!

Saturday I met with photographer/friend DanB and his sweet wife, Sandy, who came to my area with some friends from the Middle TN HHR car club. I had a great time meeting their friends and talking 'camera-talk' with someone whose eyes don't glaze over at the topic (lol)!
Thanks for including me Dan, Sandy and the HHR crew...I had lots of fun! :)

Since these were just for fun so was my processing (from black & white to lots of cross-processing)!
I almost had to stand on my head to get this shot (literally!) but I really wanted to share how beautiful the redbud tree looked in bloom behind the cannon.

Changes, Changes...

If you visit my blog regularly, you probably noticed that there are some changes going on. I've been working hard on some behind-the-scenes things...and still have several more on my "to do" list. I am attempting a major overhaul of all my photography related sites/blogs/etc. which ends up being lots of little things to plan and do.

By the way, if you are not a client and have tried to contact me in the last week, I probably haven't responded yet. My youngest daughter has been very sick and today was her first day in almost a week that she didn't have a fever...WooHoo! So, with that being said, I've been a little later than usual at returning emails/calls.

I read a quote this week (attributed to photographer Ansel Adams). I liked it so much that I wanted to share it with you also. :)

BP Finalist ~ February

Well...Another month has passed in the BP contest world. :)

This month has just seemed to go by so quickly for me. I've been working on some exciting (to me) projects...That must have made the time go by quicker.
Anyway, the BetterPhoto finalists for February were just announced. Out of the approximately 29900 entries, 400 finalists were chosen. While I am always thrilled to receive recognition, it is also somewhat disappointing to see the decreasing number of finalists each month.

"cool & textured" ~ Digital Darkroom category

For those of you who aren't aware, I started my photography competing and learning at BetterPhoto. It was the first place online that I started posting my images. As I studied the finalists and winners, I struggled to push myself to learn more. In such a competitive environment, I was "a little fish in a big pond" who was in awe of the talent there. Even though I frequently visit other places, BP is kinda like home. If it had not been for my competing at BP, I would not be the photographer that I am today. Thanks to BP, I have met (online) some of the most talented photographers...and am so happy and honored to call some of them friends!! :)

A Little Warm & A Little Cool Mixed with Mud!

Winter is a long season for me...so when the days start to turn warmer every now and then, I start getting excited. The other day was one of those warmer days. Unfortunately, the breeze blowing was cool so we only stayed outside for a few enjoyable moments...

She can even model beautifully when holding herself on a fence literally
(which explains why I didn't show her entire hand...lol!).

Home Improvement

After a few years of debating it, we finally did it! Gone is the carpet and we now are enjoying (very much) our new flooring!
My hubby and I (with a little help) spent last weekend laying flooring in our living room. I'm so thrilled with it! We selected an old wood floor look and I think it's just gorgeous! It really adds so much more character to the room. Now if only I could find the time to put my house back together again after all that relocating of living room items...lol!

What I've been up to

I am not a fan of cold weather. I like to go into hibernation during the cold months. During my downtime in the colder months, I like to look to educational opportunities to pass my time. One of my goals for 2008 was to read more photography related books. I'm constantly gaining information from forums, online articles, magazines, etc. but I wanted to focus more this year on reading books. So far I'm averaging more than one book per month. (Amazon must really like me.)
Another project for the new year involved home improvement. I'm hoping to share that when it gets finished and I get a picture to share. Let's just say...this is my favorite home improvement project that we've done!
I'm so excited thinking about spring approaching!! Since I'm so looking forward to warmer weather and always like to include a photo, I re-edited a warmer weather image from last summer.

What a hunk...

Fun in the SNOW!!

Yep...It happened again! We got more SNOW! I can't believe that we got so much! It's been YEARS since our area has gotten so much snow. We measured about 4 inches. It's already almost totally gone now but it was fun while it lasted!! We especially had fun since it was the first time that our youngest one was actually able to get outside and enjoy it... :)

Since it was beautiful weather this weekend, I got to go bird-watching. This is the time of year that the gulls pass through our area. I look forward to this time of year...since gulls have become my favorite water-bird. (We don't have a large amounts of water-lovin' birds around here.) Part of my love affair with gulls is that they are such a challenge to capture in air. Every year I get a little better at it.
One image from this weekend that I really liked was a gull flying with the trees in the background. I have many pictures with gulls in the sky and gulls near the water...so the trees made this one a little more special. :)

One advantage of being a photographer is what I can share with my kids. Today was a beautiful warm day (funny...a few days ago it was snowing!). My youngest daughter and I headed to our favorite spot for watching water-birds. The birds were everywhere and we had a great time. She got to feed the birds and I got to photograph them.
However, my favorite image of the day has nothing to do with a bird. As we were leaving, she asked to carry my small camera bag (which had been filled with bird food). As she walked away, I captured the image below.

It actually snowed today! I was so excited!
It looked so beautiful falling but unfortunately that was all...It didn't last once it hit the ground. However, that didn't stop me from enjoying the soft falling flakes. I couldn't help but pop outside every now and then for a quick snapshot. ;)

BP Finalists ~ January

When I first started online photography, I joined BetterPhoto. At that time there were under 10,000 entries and one thousand plus finalists. My, how times have changed! The entries at BP are now running over 34,000 and the finalists are narrowing with only 526 total finalists this month. With the amount of finalists growing smaller, it becomes even harder to capture the attention of the judges. In the month of January, only 74 (of the 3,000+ usual entries in the people category) were chosen as finalists.

Stormy Weather & a POTD

Last night was a rough one. Winter tornadoes (which I hear are very rare) tore through several states here in the Southern area of the US. Unfortunately, they were deadly as well as terrifying.

I went outside during the night as the storms settled
and stared at the "light show" in the distance which lit up the dark sky.
I managed to catch a few shots (using 1600 ISO...It was dark!)
before the winds and rain became too much.

On a more positive note, I was honored to receive a picture of the day today at PhotoShowdown. Since I haven't been competing much in that area lately, it was very nice...and it never hurts when you really like the image too! :)

I don't usually promote non-photography items on this blog...but since this one includes a picture, I'll make the exception. :)
Christian author Tricia Goyer takes a look at the way Generation X sees marriage through the eyes of members of Generation X couples complete with "flashbacks" to those wonderful 80s lyrics. Tricia writes in a style that would be much like reading a note from a friend. Random facts about our generation are scattered throughout the book keeping the material moving along in an interesting way. By looking at marriage from the perspective of fellow members of our generation, we can see that we all have more in common than we thought. I was thrilled just to have the opportunity and contribute to this work in a very small part! (Thanks, Tricia!)

Why do I enjoy sunsets so much? I find nighttime peaceful...and sunsets are a sign of the peacefulness to come. :)

New Products!

I really enjoy trying out new products. Before Christmas, I decide to try out two new products, Gallery Mounting and Standout Mounting.

Gallery Mounting - the image is mounted to a sturdy board much like a plaque. This is GORGEOUS! It turns a simple image into a real treasure!

I've seen pictures of these before but they truly do NOT do this product justice.

Best of 2007 Honors

Sometimes in competitive photography, the photographer 'shoots for the contest,' which means the image is designed to appeal to the contest judges and may not be something that the photographer really enjoys.

I truly enjoy sunsets! I am so intrigued by the way they are so different every night.
In April 2007, this image won first place in the special category, "Wonders of Nature" at PhotoShowdown. Recently it was also named one of the Best of 2007 images. It even has a BetterPhoto finalist button to add to its list of credits.
But do you want to know the best honor that this image has? It is displayed proudly in my living room just because I like it! So, I guess that means that it makes the the very prestigious list of my personal Best of 2007! :)

The Reason I Started...

Reflecting on 2007 ~

As 2007 draws to a close and 2008 is lingering near, it's a wonderful time for personal reflection. The new year also marks the end of a year of portfolio building. When I first started learning photography, it was for totally selfish reasons: I wanted beautiful portraits of my girls for my walls. :)

I've studied from some of my personal favorite contemporary photographers. However, no matter how much I learn, there's always something new in photography. I am so lucky to have some of the best friends and fellow photographers with whom I can learn and share. (And you know who you are! I'm SO thankful for y'all!!)

Because I enjoy what I do so much, I've spent the last year providing free portrait sessions to those who were interested. My photographer friends probably think that I'm insane to put all the work into my images without receiving a single penny for a portrait session fee. However, I've been very fortunate to have photographed some really wonderful people this past year.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that I photographed. Thank you for making this year a wonderful experience for me...and supporting my photography habit! ;)

Since the world of photography is always changing, that means I'm constantly learning in order to keep up with all the best techniques and products. This constant state of learning assures you that I'm always working to offer the best portraits possible!
Speaking of changes, I'm working on several changes for the new year. I ordered a few new display items this month of some new products. I'm working on policy changes and website updates. Hopefully, the new year will bring some fabulous new opportunities!

Doing what I enjoy is a dream come true. Thank you to EVERYONE who has been a part of that! :)

The Christmas rush has pretty much been filling my mind lately. (I'm SO far behind this year! I seriously haven't even started shopping!) However, last night I finally found a couple of moments to express myself with a little creativity.
These twins were such a pleasure to photograph. They had the best smiles...so natural!
While looking through some files to clean out, I saw this image. After applying a chocolate black and white look, I knew what I wanted to do with this image. Using layers and textures, I designed this image.

Current History

I had an 'assignment' recently to photograph this piece of history. A beautiful building, it was once a movie theater. It has since been converted to a stage theater. This building holds so many memories...
In fact, as I was taking the photos, an older gentleman stopped. He began reminiscing about going to see "cowboy movies" inside these walls. I was happy to stop and listen to his story. It put a smile on my face to think that walking by this building brought back such wonderful memories for this man...memories that were special enough to share with me.
This building is special to me because of it's current purpose...
However, it's even more special because of it's history as well...

Upon completing an assignment yesterday, I decided to take a detour on the way home...after all, I already had my camera. ;)
I thought I'd look around and see what I could find. I drove around for awhile and was just about to head home...

...when I found these beautiful fall colored trees next to a small pond.

I do not like the thoughts of the coming cold weather...but the fall colored leaves are a wonderful beauty to behold! :)

I was just in the mood to share tonight.

Here's a sunset from a few weeks ago. It was SO dark. I really had to work my camera settings to get anything but darkness...but I thought it was too beautiful not to try.

In this one you can see the moon slightly over the edge of the trees.

This photo was taken on the same day...an armadillo! I'd never seen one so close. I walked slowly and cautiously toward this one that I saw in a state park. In this one, it's looking right at me...and I'm talking sweetly ("Hey, little armadillo...Can I take your picture?"). I must look hilarious when I'm photographing wildlife...especially when I'm talking to my subjects...LOL!

How I Spent Halloween

Would you believe photographing a wedding!? I did!
This couple are both actors who perform with an area theater company. Since they met in the theater, what better place for them to say their wedding vows? ...And with Halloween approaching, that's all the excuse this couple needed to prepare a very special setting for their special night!

The theater was decorated beautifully with lots of Halloween decorations...
with wedding accents

The flowers were beautiful!!
(above they are reflected in the dressing room mirror)I had the groom step into the doorway to the stage for some dramatic lighting.
He was dressed in a favorite costume, a knight...so the bride really did get her knight! :)

The bride was glowing as she got ready to head down the aisle.The bride and groom share a tender moment in their "special corner" backstage.

The evening wouldn't have been complete without the guests dressed in costume....FUN!
It was a truly unique event...I'm so glad that I was able to be a part of it!!
(Not many couples can say that their wedding photos were taken by a French maid...lol!)

BetterPhoto announced the finalists for the month of September this week. It's always such a thrill to have images recognized in this prestigious international contest. Out of over 38200 entries, only 644 were awarded finalists status.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding in a beautiful state park setting. The location was beautiful and so was the bride. She told me that she wasn't very good at posing but you certainly can't tell it from these images!

They were such a cooperative couple when it came to photographs...and SO cute together! I had a wonderful time!!
